Watch: Students in Assam cross river using aluminium pots to reach school

A video of students crossing the river using aluminium pots to reach their school has attracted sharp reactions from Twitter users.

The students belong to a primary government school in Assam's Biswanath district.

One Twitter user said it's a very bad situation after 72 years of freedom while another said it's shameful to watch school kids risking their lives for want of safe transport facilities. How did the state government build a school without the basic infrastructure in place?

''It worries me that the students cross the river using aluminium pots as there is no bridge in the area. They earlier used makeshift boats made from Banana trees,'' said J Das, a teacher at the govt primary school in Biswanath district's Naduwar area.

Pramod Borthakur, MLA Biswanath, Assam said he is ashamed to see children suffer.

''I'm ashamed to see this. There is no PWD road in the area. Don't know how government constructed a school on an island. We can definitely provide a boat for the students. I will ask the district officer to shift the school to another place,'' he added.
