IIT Kanpur Suspends 22 Students for Ragging

The Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur (IIT-K) has punished twenty-twoengineering students for their alleged involvement in ragging on campus.
The institute suspended sixteenstudents for three years and six others for up to a year.
The students were suspended after they were found guilty ofragging their juniors.
The third-year students allegedly forced their juniors to strip and perform indecent acts. The incident was recorded on cell phones and circulated on social media.
The decision to suspend the students was taken by the institute's senate which is the apex decision making body of the institute.
At a meeting held on Monday night, the senate decided to suspend the students involved in ragging.
The suspended students will not be allowed to appeal for mercy till they complete their period of suspension, IIT-K decided.
The students can appeal for admission only after they complete their punishment.
Also, the president and other officials of the student gymkhana were expelled from their postfor ignoring the students' complaints.
The department took action against the students involved in ragging only after one of the professors at the institute highlighted the matter through his blog.
The University Grants Commission in 2009 has set up an anti-ragging helpline to curb ragging in college campus.
The Commission's decision was taken after a medical student Aman Kachroo from Himachal Pradesh was killed in 2009 after a ragging incident.
