Veteran Indian politician and Uttar Pradesh ex-CM Mulayam Singh Yadav dies
He was battling a prolonged spell of illness
Veteran Indian politician and Samajwadi party supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav died on Monday (October 10). He was 82. He took his last breath between 8 am to 8:30 am at the Medanta hospital in the northern Indian city of Gurugram, Haryana, where he has been undergoing treatment.
In a tweet, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav, who was himself a chief minister of Uttar Pradesh, announcedthe passing away of his father.
The socialist leader was admitted in Medanta Hospital on August 22. On October 1, he was shifted to the ICU after his health deteriorated. He was battling a prolonged spell of illness.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed grief over the demiseand lauded the Indian politician's contribution to the country.
Uttar Pradesh state government has announceda three-day state mourning.
"His last rites will be performed with full state honours," Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath said.
Fondly called 'Netaji' (Respected Leader) by supporters and party workers, the octogenarian is credited with ushering his socialist brandof politics in Uttar Pradesh.
Yadav served as defence minister and as chief minister of Uttar Pradesh thrice.
A wrestler-turned-teacher, Mulayam—who was born on November 22, 1939, into a farming family in Etawah—completed his MA (political science) and B.Ed degrees.He belongs to the most politicallyprominent caste in Uttar Pradesh—the Yadav.
He was elected an MLA 10 times and an MP, mostly from Mainpuri and Azamgarh, seven times.
