Sources from the Ministry of External Affairs on Wednesday stated that the final call in the extradition of AgustaWestland middleman Christian Michel to Indiarests with the UAE "foreign office".
"As per rules, the final call is always taken by the foreign office of a particular country. In case of UAE, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) decides the fate of an accused against whom the court has given an extradition order," ANI quoted MEA sources on Christian Michel.
The statement also added that no formal communication or confirmation has come from UAE.
"As per the law, the accused has right to appeal. It's a matter of UAE, no formal communication or confirmation has come from UAE."
Christian Michel was arrested in February 2017 by the UAE authorities.
The Indian investigative agencies had been pushing UAE for extradition ever since. Michel has been in detention in Dubai since June. He was placed under detention after India asked for his extradition through Dubai court.
The AgustaWestland case involves alleged bribes paid by the firm to Indians to clinch the deal for 12 helicopters to ferry VVIPs including the President and Prime Minister.
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) had in 2013 registered a case in connection with the matter.
Several politicians and military officials have been accused of accepting bribes from AgustaWestland in order to win the ₹36 billion (US$500 million) Indian contract.
