Incumbent President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has won the Turkish presidential election with an "absolute majority" of valid votes, the country's national electoral board says.
Having just won twin presidential and parliamentary polls, Erdogan, who has run Turkey for more than 15 years, has been re-elected to a more powerful role thanks to changes authorised in a controversial referendum last year.
The post of Prime Minister has been abolished and Erdogan will now have increased power over the budget and the judiciary and the ability to rule by decree and dissolve Parliament.
Erdogan rules in a way that his critics call him a throne bearer rather than a democratically-elected president.
Erdogan has openly challenged constitutional court and said he did neither respect nor accept its ruling.
Honorary doctorate at Jamia Millia Islamia
Last year, Tayyip Erdogan was presented with an honorary doctorate degree at Jamia Millia Islamia.
Some students and alumni, however, had opposed the decision claiming that Erdogan has been involved in “blatant human rights violation and has become a dictator in Turkey.”
During his visit, He strongly advocated for India's membership in the UN Security Council and added that the international order cannot be called in until India's 1.3 billion people are given representation in the world body.
India–Turkey relations
India and Turkey have a  great cultural overlap. The Turkish impact on India in areas such as language, costumes and cuisine is considerable.
Even Mahatma Gandhi was at the forefront of the Khilafat Movement, which many say was for his populist streak.
The Khilafat movement (1919–22) was a pan-Islamist, political protest campaign launched by Muslims of India to influence the British government not to abolish the Ottoman Caliphate.
More than 150 companies with Indian capital have registered businesses in Turkey in the form of joint ventures, trade and representative offices.
India has an embassy in Ankara and a consulate–general in Istanbul. Turkey has an embassy in New Delhi and a consulate-general in Mumbai.
