In yet another embarrassment to US President Donald Trump his adviser, Kellyanne Conway was caught off guard on questions over US President's claims on mediating in the Kashmir issue.

Conway was addressing reporters at the White House when she was questioned whether Trump had made up his statement that he was asked to mediate in the Kashmir issue by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

In a timid response, Conway who has been a long-time adviser of Trump said that she has not discussed that with the US president.

During a media briefing along with Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan, Trump had said that he would love to mediate between India and Pakistan on the Kashmir issue, saying that he would do so at PM Modi's behest.

"I was with Prime Minister Modi two weeks ago and we talked about this subject and he actually said 'Would you like to be a mediator or arbitrator', I said 'Where', He said 'Kashmir'. Because this has been going on for many, many years," Trump said at the White House, where he was hosting Pakistan's Prime Minister Imran Khan.

"If I can help, I would love to be a mediator. If I can do anything to help, let me know," he added.

Trump's statement was rejected by India which reiterated that any resolution between India and Pakistan is based on accords and that no such request had been made by the Indian prime minister.
