The Election Commission of India (ECI) has called for a crucial meeting after the Telangana cabinet decided to dissolve the state Assembly for early polls on Thursday, news agency ANI reported.
According to reports, the meeting has been called to consider all legal and logistical aspects to deliberate on the next course of action.
The meeting will be headed by top ECI officials and will set the ground for the legal and logistical framework required to hold early polls in the state this year.
Telangana cabinet on Thursday decided to dissolve the assembly ahead of state elections due next year. The ruling TRS reportedly sees political benefit in delinking the two polls.
Governor ESL Narasimhan approved the dissolution as recommended by CM KC Rao and has asked CM Rao to continue as caretaker Telangana CM till the new government is formed.
CM Rao held a press conference and announced that his party Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) will contest the elections alone. The TRS will kickstart its election campaign today.
Speculation about the dissolution and early polls in Telangana were rife for over a fortnight now.
