Suspected militants ambush Manipur CM N Biren Singh's advance security convoy, one injured

Suspected militants ambushed Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh's advance security convoy in Kangpokpi district on Monday (June 10).

The convoy was en route to the conflict-hit Jiribam district.

The police stated that several gunshots were fired in response.

The officials said that the shootout was still on near the Kotlen village, which was situated along a stretch of National Highway 53.

At least one police personnel suffered bullet injuries during the ambush, said the police.

"CM Biren Singh, who is yet to reach Imphal from Delhi, was planning to visit Jiribam to take stock of the situation in the district,” news agency PTI quoted an official as saying.

Around 600 people from Jiribam take shelter in Assam

Approximately 600 people from Manipur's Jiribam area took shelter in Assam's Cachar district after reports of fresh violence, said an Assam Police official.

Superintendent of Police of Cachar district, Numal Mahatta said that around 600 people from Jiribam were taking shelter in Cachar district.

"We have beefed up security along the bordering areas of our side following the fresh violence that erupted in the Jiribam area in Manipur. We have deployed security personnel, special commando forces and they are patrolling in all bordering areas," Numal Mahatta said.

"The locals who are peace-loving people are also cooperating with us. Nearly 600 people from the Jiribam area have fled towards Assam and they are taking shelter in some of their relative's places. We are monitoring the situation,"Mahatta added.
