Supreme Court agrees with government: Aadhaar to be linked with all schemes till March 31st next year

Supreme Court has agreed withgovernment's decision to link Aadhaar with all schemes till March 31st next year.
The five-judge Constitution bench also passed an interim order to extend the linking of Aadhaar with mobile phones in the country.
Attorney General KK Venugopal, arguing for the Centre had said during his argument in India's highest court that the government was willing to extend the deadline for linking Aadhaar to avail the benefits of welfare schemes up to March 31st next year.
The Centre's lawyer had told the five-judge Constitution bench that Aadhaar should remain mandatory for the opening of new bank accounts.
However, Gopal Subramanium, arguing on behalf of the petitioner had said linking Aadhaar would take away the its "voluntary nature".
The government had on Wednesday extended the deadline, till March 31, for the linking of Aadhaar and PAN numbers for bank accounts and certain financial transactions.
