Reform on the ground should come from society: AIMIM's Owaisi on triple talaq

After the historic Supreme Court verdict banning the practice of triple talaq in the country, Asaduddin Owaisi,leader of theAll India Majlis-e-Ittehad-ul Muslimeen (AIMIM), said there was a need for society to reform and the All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) would meet in Bhopal early next month to take a view on the top court verdict.

"Judicial pronouncements and law ... experience tells us that what is needed is that society should reform. Reform on the ground should come from society."

He asked whether the courts will bring in the social reforms which the All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) was doing on the ground.

Owaisi had earlier said that his views on triple talaq were the same as the AIMPLB.The AIMPLB has been opposing the practice of triple talaq and has said it does not want thetop court to interfere in Muslim Personal Law and ban the Islamic practice of divorce.

Asked to comment on the verdict, the AIMPLB said today that it will chalk out its future course of action in its working committee meeting on September 10 in Bhopal.

The meeting was convened earlier and its agenda was issued yesterday, a member of the Board's working committee Zafaryab Jilani said.

He also refused to comment on the decision without studying it in detail.

"The working committee meeting in Bhopal on September 10 will take a decision on the future course of action on today's Supreme Court verdict after studying it in detail," he said, adding that the hearing on the Babri
mosque case was also on the agenda of the meeting.

The Indian Union Muslim League, the second largest ally of the Congress-led UDF in Kerala, said the central government should not show undue haste in coming out with an ordinance and discuss the issue.
