In a rather cryptic tweet, superstar Rajnikanth lauded the effort of 'Mersal' crew and said that the movie has addressed an 'important topic'.
Though it was not clear what does Superstar infer by 'important topic', the Tamil superhit starring Vijay was recently mired in controversy after release when Tamil Nadu BJP unit took reservations to some of the dialogues in it especially one alluding to Goods and Service Tax.
The BJP leaders wanted to makers of the movie to erase some of the dialogues from the movie to which initially the producer agreed only to back off later.
Several actors and politicians have expressed their support for the producers of the movie and condemned the BJP's effort to curb 'freedom of expression'.
Actor Kamal Haasan tweeted 'Mersal' was certified. Don't re-censor it. Counter criticism with the logical response. Don't silence critics. India will shine when it speaks.
Meanwhile five days after its release, the film crossed 150 crores worldwide, according to its producers.
