Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi was the subject of quite a few jokes after he stopped just short of describing "Indira canteens" as "Amma canteens', a brainchild of former Tamil Nadu chief minister J Jayalalithaa.
Rahul Gandhi, who was launching "Indira canteen" in Karnataka's Bengaluru on Wednesday, said "That is the vision of the Amma....The Indira canteen."
"And soon, over the next couple of months, every single city in Bangalore, every single poor person in every single city in Bangalore will feel that in the state of Karnataka under Siddaramaih ji's government I simply cannot go hungry," Rahul Gandhi said referring to Karnataka chief minister Siddaramaiah's Congress government which governs the state.
Indira canteens, named after former prime minister Indira Gandhi, will offer breakfast at Rs 5 and lunch and dinner at Rs 10 per plate.
Initially called "Namma canteens", the name of the subsidised food canteens was subsequently changed to "Indira canteen."
Amma canteens, launched in 2013 by Jayalalithaa, offer affordable food - an Idli costs Rs 1 while a plate of sambar-rice costs Rs 5.
The launch of the Indira canteen comes ahead of the Karnataka Assembly elections which are likely to take place next year.
