India evacuates 1,171 nationals from Iran amid conflict; 8 Indians dead, several injured as MEA ramps up rescue and safety efforts in West Asia
Over 1,150 Indian nationals have exited Iran through land border crossings into Armenia and Azerbaijan since the onset of the West Asia conflict a month ago, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) confirmed on Wednesday (April 1). "Our embassy in Tehran has facilitated the movement of 1,171 Indian nationals, including 818 students, to exit Iran via the land borders into Armenia and Azerbaijan," MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said at a media briefing. "From there, our nationals have been flying back to India," he said. Jaiswal added that 977 Indians crossed into Armenia, while 194 entered Azerbaijan.
Official figures indicate that about 9,000 Indians, including students, were present in Iran when the conflict erupted after strikes on Iranian targets by Israel and the US on February 28. Aseem Mahajan, additional secretary (Gulf) in the MEA, reported that three Indian nationals were injured in attacks in Dubai on Tuesday. "They are receiving medical treatment at local hospitals, and one has since been discharged," he said. So far, eight Indian nationals have lost their lives in the West Asia conflict. This includes one killed in Kuwait during an Iranian strike on a power and water desalination facility earlier this week.
Last week, another Indian was among two fatalities in the UAE after missile interception debris fell onto a street. On March 18, an Indian national died in an Iranian attack on Riyadh. Earlier, on March 13, two Indians were killed and 10 others injured in a drone strike in Sohar, Oman.
Additionally, three Indian sailors lost their lives in attacks on merchant vessels. Mahajan confirmed that the bodies of an Indian seafarer killed in an attack on the merchant vessel Safesea Vishnu off Iraq’s coast on March 11, and another Indian killed in Kuwait on March 29, arrived in India on Wednesday. In recent weeks, India has intensified diplomatic efforts to ensure the safety of nearly 10 million Indian nationals residing across West Asia.
