No permanent residential accommodation for ex-UP chief ministers: Supreme Court

The Supreme Court has quashed a law passed by the Uttar Pradesh government granting "permanent residential accommodation" for ex-chief ministers in the state.

The top court struck down Section4(3) of UP ministers allowance Act which allowed ex-CMs in the state to occupy government bungalows.

After an NGO filed a petition in the Supreme Court, the bench comprising of Ranjan Gogoi and R Banumathi passed the judgement.

India's apex court said former CMs in the state are not entitled to government houses.

"Once a person demits public office, there is nothing to distinguish them from common man", the Court stated.

Two years ago the SP-led Akhilesh Yadav government had moved a statute to get over the judgment.
