Highlights: Narendra Modi swears in as PM; 71 ministers take oath inclcuding Amit Shah, Rajnath Singh

The list of 71 ministers in the new coalition government comprises of 30 Cabinet Ministers, 5 Ministers of State (MoS) with independent charge, and 36 Ministers of State (MoS). The portfolios haven’t been announced yet, but the formation and structure of Modi 3.0 shows a pan-India representation and also adequate focus on the alliance partners.

BJP leader Bhupathiraju Srinivasa Varma took oath as a minister in the new Narendra Modi-led NDA government today.

Varma won from the Narasapuram constituency in Andhra Pradesh.

BJP leader Ravneet Singh Bittu, who lost from the Ludhiana Lok Sabha seat, took oath as a minister in the new Narendra Modi-led NDA government today.

On attending the oath ceremony of the new government, Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge said, "I am attending this event because of the constitutional duty. I being the LoP in the Rajya Sabha, this is my duty..."

When asked if he would congratulate PM-designate Narendra Modi, he said, "If I meet, I will see..."

Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister and NCP Chief Ajit Pawar said, "Praful Patel has served as a cabinet minister in the central government and we did not feel right in taking Minister of State with independent charge. So we told them (BJP) that we are ready to wait for a few days, but we want a cabinet ministry. We are going to attend the swearing-in ceremony today..."

He further said, "We have one Lok Sabha and one Rajya Sabha MP today, but in the next 2-3 months we will have a total of 3 members in the Rajya Sabha and our number of MPs in Parliament will be 4. So we said we should be given one (cabinet ministry) seat."
 

Members of the transgender community from different parts of the country have been invited to PM-designate Narendra Modi's oath ceremony at Rashtrapati Bhavan today

One of them said, "Transgender persons are also getting many rights now under Modi ji's rule. Modi ji supported the rights of transgenders."

Singer Kailash Kher said, "I congratulate all the people of the country for choosing a strong government for the third...In the history of the country, he (Narendra Modi) is the second PM who has been selected for the third term...The NDA is forming the government again under the vision and leadership of PM Modi and today we are here to attend this ceremony..."

These workers have been invited for the swearing-in ceremony of PM-designate Narendra Modi. They will be going to Rashtrapati Bhavan from the residence of BJP leader Mansukh Mandaviya

A worker who was involved in the construction of the new Parliament building, Anil Kumar Singh said, "...I am very happy because this will be the first time I will be meeting the Prime Minister..."

BJP MP-elect from Pune, Murlidhar Mohol, is set to be inducted into Modi cabinet. Speaking to ANI news agency, he said, "I am fortunate that I have got an opportunity to serve in the Modi cabinet. He (PM-designate Narendra Modi) spoke to us for an hour today. This happens only in BJP that a party worker can also reach this level."

Telangana BJP president G Kishan Reddy said, "After independence, this is happening for the second time that a PM, Narendra Modi will take oath as Prime Minister for the third time... Our party was established for a nationalist movement in the country...  I thank everyone as a worker of the BJP and congratulate PM-designate Narendra Modi..."

Jitin Prasada, a sitting minister in the Uttar Pradesh government, is set to become a Union Minister in the Narendra Modi-cabinet.

Former Bihar chief minister and Hindustani Awam Morcha-Secular (HAM-S) founder Jitan Ram Manjhi is likely to be inducted in the NDA government headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. 

Ram Nath Thakur, Rajya Sabha MP from Janata Dal (United -JD-U) is likely in the list of probables in Bihar. He was minister of revenue and land reforms, law, information and public relations from November 2005 to November 2010 during Nitish Kumar’s cabinet.

Union minister Parshottam Rupala has been dropped from the Cabinet ministers list.

TMC MP Sagarika Ghose has turned down the invitation for the oath ceremony saying the opposition leaders do not accpt “moral legitimacy of the swearing-in”.

JD(S) leader and former PM HD Deve Gowda will not attend the oath-taking ceremony of PM-designate Narendra Modi due to his "frail health"

"Narendra Modi is becoming the Prime Minister for the third time...Based on the development works done by him, the public voted for him...NDA is not a weak alliance...The INDIA alliance has no majority," says Former Lok Sabha Speaker and BJP leader Sumitra Mahajan.

The Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Sudip Bandyopadhyay said that it will not attend Narendra Modi's swearing-in ceremony, said the party's leader in the Lok Sabha.

"BJP leader Prahlad Joshi had called and invited us to attend the swearing-in ceremony, but our party has decided not to participate," Bandyopadhyay said.

In the tea meeting, Modi said to the BJP leaders that a 100-day action plan has to be implemented on the ground. He added that pending schemes of the respective departments need to be implemented properly. He further said that the faith of the people in the NDA is to be strengthened and the resolution of developed India has to be proved. 

NDA leaders, which included BL Verma, Shobha Karandlaje, Giriraj Singh, Ramdas Athawale and Nityanand Rai, left from 7, LKM, the residence of Prime Minister-designate Narendra Modi after the tea meeting ended.
 

Newly elected BJP MP from Thrissur Suresh Gopi left for the national capital to attend the swearing-in ceremony of PM-designate Narendra Modi. 

When asked if he will be offered a post in the cabinet, Gopi said, "Let me reach Delhi. Let me take the decision of my leaders."

Congress President and LoP in Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge, after holding discussions with the party and allies, has decided to attend the PM-designate Narendra Modi's swearing-in ceremony at Rashtrapati Bhavan. 

BJP leaders Amit Shah, JP Nadda, BL Verma, Pankaj Chaudhary, Shivraj Singh Chouhan, Annapurna Devi, Arjun Ram Meghwal reached the Prime Minister-designate Narendra Modi's residence to attend the tea meeting.  

PM-Designate Modi will take the oath of the prime minister for the third consecutive term on June 9 at 7.15 pm.

When asked about the formation of the Union Cabinet, Hindustani Awam Morcha (HAM), an ally of the NDA, said it was hopeful that it would get the chance to serve people.

"As of now, we don't have any information. We are hopeful that we will get the chance to serve people. We would like to thank the people of Gaya who voted for us and NDA allies for taking our party to this level that we can represent in Parliament," HAM leader Santosh Manjhi told the news agency PTI. 

A Ganga aarti performed in Varanasi ahead of Narendra Modi's swearing-in ceremony on Sunday.

Modi won the Lok Sabha elections from the Varanasi seat, securing a total of 612,970 votes. Modi defeated Congress' Ajay Rai by a margin of 152,513 votes.

India's capital Delhi was declared a no-fly-zone as multi-layered security arrangements were made across the city which prepares to host Narendra Modi's swearing-in ceremony as the prime minister for a third consecutive term.

Two MPs of the Telugu Desam Party (TDP)- Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu and Dr Chandra Sekhar Pemmasani- will be sworn in as ministers in the Narendra Modi cabinet later on Sunday.

Kinjarapu, 36, the son of former Union minister Yerran Naidu, will be come the youngest-ever cabinet minister.

"President Mohamed Muizzu of Maldives arrives to a warm welcome in New Delhi to attend the swearing-in ceremony of Prime Minister and Council of Ministers," the Indian ministry said on Sunday, adding, that India and the Maldives are maritime partners and close neighbours.

Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge will attend Prime Minister Narendra Modi's swearing-in ceremony.

In a statement, the Congress said that Kharge will attend the ceremony in his capacity as the Leader of the Opposition (LoP) in the Rajya Sabha. 

"President of Sri Lanka, Ranil Wickremesinghe; President of Maldives, Mohamed Muizzu; Vice-President of Seychelles, Ahmed Afif; Prime Minister of Bangladesh, Sheikh Hasina; Prime Minister of Mauritius, Pravind Kumar Jugnauth; Prime Minister of Nepal, Pushpa Kamal Dahal 'Prachanda'; and Prime Minister of Bhutan, Tshering Tobgay, have accepted the invitation to attend," the Indian foreign ministry said on Saturday. 

Narendra Modi will be sworn in as India's prime minister for a third consecutive time on Sunday at the Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi. The ceremony will take place at 7.15 pm IST.
