Stalin addressed party members at DMK headquarters in Chennai today.

"MK Stalin today has taken a rebirth," the newly-appointed chief noted.

He stated that the party is bigger than any individual entity and admitted that the only thing that worries him is the fact that his father, Tamil Nadu's Kalaignar M Karunanidhi, is not present to witness this day.

"Today's political situation has come as a grave challenge. Education, art, literature, religion are under an attack by authoritative and communal forces. Union government is trying to destabilise thejudiciary, selection of governors. All this has dealt a blow to the secular principle," Stalin stated.

Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) working president and son of late former Tamil Nadu chief minister M Karunanidhi was elected as party's chief on Tuesday at the party's General Council meeting.

DMK General Secretary K Anbazhagan said that 1,307 party officials supported Stalin's candidature. Senior leader Duraimurugan was also elected unopposed as the party's Treasurer.

The position of DMK president had been lying vacant after the demise of M Karunanidhi on August 7.

Stalin was holding the post of working president in the party while Alagiri was expelled from the political outfit in March 2014 by Karunanidhi for slanderous attacks on senior party members and carrying out anti-party activities.
