Meghalaya Election Results 2023:The National People's Party (NPP) leader and Meghalaya Chief Minister, Conrad K Sangma, stated that the party is still short of a few seats for a majority in the assembly elections, the results of which were declared on Thursday. He further added that the party would wait for the final results before deciding on the way forward.

The National People's Party (NPP) has emerged as the single-largest party in Meghalaya by securing 26 seats in the 60-seat Assembly. As no party managed to secure the majority mark of 31, the NPP is likely to ally with the BJP or the United Democratic Party (UDP) or maybe even both to form a coalition government. Chief Minister Conrad Sangma has reached out to Union Home Minister Amit Shah, seeking his support and blessings in forming the new government.

The UDP finished second by winning 11 seats in the assembly, and the Congress secured five seats. However, the party's state chief and Shillong MP, Vincent H Pala, lost to the ruling NPP's Santa Mary Shylla by 1,828 votes in the Sutnga Saipung constituency in the East Jaintia Hills. The Trinamool Congress and BJP won five and two seats, respectively. This is a repeat of the proceedings five years ago, where the NPP allied with the BJP and the UDP to form a coalition government.

As per final resultsreleased by Election Commission of India (ECI), out of total 60 seats,

The ruling party NPP won 26seats.

BJPmanaged to win just 2.

TMC emerged victorious on 5 seats.

Congressregistered victory on 5 seats.

United Democratic Party'scandidates won on 11 seats.

Others won 10 seats.

On February 27, Meghalaya conducted polling for 59 assembly constituencies, with a high voter turnout of 85.17 per cent. However, polling for the Sohiong seat was deferred due to the unfortunate death of one of the candidates. The current Chief Minister, Conrad Sangma, is seeking re-election for his second consecutive term, representing the National People’s Party (NPP).

What were Exit polls predicting for Meghalaya?

Exit polls earlier showed that the National People’s Party (NPP) willwin the most number of seats in Meghalaya, which has turned out to be valid prediction.The predictions showed that NPP is expected to win 18-24 seats out of the total 60. The BJP, which is likely to win in the other two states, Tripura and Nagaland, was expected to win only 4-8 seats in Meghalaya, as per exit polls.The Congress waslikely to win 6-12 seats, the Trinamool Congress (TMC) 5-9 seats, while others wereexpected to emerge victorious on 17-29 seats.
