A major fire broke out at the Bhalswa landfill site in Delhi during the wee hours of Saturday.

The massive 40 acre-wide trash disposal is said to be the largest in Delhi which gets around 2,700 tonnes of garbage each day.

The area was covered with toxic gases, due to the decomposing waste in large amountof garbage. This led to low visibilityaround Azadpur Mandi, reports said.

Reports say that the landfill had previously caught fire in 2016which took several days before it was brought under control.

The authorities said in 2006 that the landfill hadreached its limit, but garbage is being dumped in the landfill to date.
