Mumbai Police have arrested a man from Ahmedabad for allegedly threatening Congress spokesperson Priyanka Chaturvedi's daughter with rape.
News reports identified the man as Girish Maheshwari. Chaturvedi's daughter is 10 years old.
News reports quoted Chaturvedi as saying her Twitter handle had been bombarded with a steady stream of abuse after a fake quote about the recent rape of a seven-year-old in Madhya Pradesh's Mandsaur was attributed to her.
Maheshwari was arrested after Home Minister Rajnath Singh stepped in. He asked Mumbai Police to register a case, identify the person(s) — posts to her handle seem to indicate more than one person had made rape threats — making the threats, and take legal action.
"... my gratitude to @HMOIndia & @rajnathsingh ji for taking this up," Chaturvedi wrote on Twitter after the arrest.
Maheshwari was later produced before a Mumbai court, and later remanded in police custody till July 10.
External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj had also also been hit by abuse recently after a Muslim man and a Hindu woman alleged they had been harassed by a passport officer in Lucknow. They had tweeted Swaraj about the harassment, saying the passport official had been uncivil to them because of their interfaith marriage.
