The Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church has protested the proposal extended by the National Commission for Women (NCW) for prohibiting churches from practising Sacrament of Holy Confession.
The Church authorities said that the proposal by the NCW was against the spirit of ancient Indian culture.
It also asked the centre to reject the proposal.
In a statement released on Sunday, the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church said, "We protest proposal of National Commission for Women to prohibit churches from practising Sacrament of Holy Confession. This is against spirit of ancient Indian culture which respects different faiths with tolerance. Request Centre to reject this.
The NCW had proposed to prohibit churches from practising the ritual of confession in churches.
The proposal was suggested by the NCW after a rape was involving four priests of the Orthodox Church was revealed.
