On Congress workers allegedly pelting stones during her rally in Kaza, BJP candidate from Mandi, Kangana Ranaut says, "We were attached our vehicles were attacked. Congress had organised a violent protest. I think they now know that they have lost the seat, so they are coming on the roads. Two of our party workers have been seriously injured...It is very sad that they are stopping to such a level..."

The fifth phase of the Lok Sabha elections for 49 parliamentary constituencies saw a cumulative voter turnout of 56.68 per cent till 5 pm, as per the data shared by the Election Commission.

A voter turnout of 36.73 per cent has been recorded so far in the fifth phase of the Lok Sabha elections. Ladakh has registered the highest turnout at 52.02 per cent followed by West Bengal at 48.41 per cent. 

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, who is contesting the elections from Rae Bareli, was seen visiting a Hanuman Temple in the constituency.

In the Indian state of West Bengal, an argument broke out between BJP's candidate from Hooghly Locket Chatterjee, and a person who was claiming to be a polling agent.

"He was a TMC agent and does not have any documents. He went inside the booth and kept asking people to vote for TMC. Police are not doing anything...," Chatterjee told the news agency ANI.

A voter turnout of 23.66 per cent has been recorded till 11 am, according to the Election Commission. 

For the first time, people in Jammu & Kashmir's Poonch cast a 'home vote' in the fifth phase of the Lok Sabha Elections 2024. 

Actor Randeep Hooda displayed his inked finger to the media after casting his vote at a polling booth in Mumbai. He said, "In a democracy, through voting you have the right to decide your future and that of your country. You must vote...Participate in this festival of democracy and vote..."

Bollywood actor Dharmendra reached a polling booth to cast his vote. Meanwhile, actress and MP Hema Malini and her daughter Esha Deol also voted in the fifth phase of the Lok Sabha elections.

A voter turnout of 10.28 per cent was recorded till 9 am in the fifth phase of polling for Lok Sabha polls, stated the Election Commission of India (ECI). 

Bihar recorded 8.86 per cent voter turnout, Jharkhand 11.68 per cent, Jammu and Kashmir recorded 7.63 per cent. Ladakh 10.51 per cent, Maharashtra 6.33 per cent, West Bengal 15.35 per cent and Odisha 6.87 per cent, stated the poll body.

Actress Anita Raj voted in the fifth phase of the Lok Sabha elections and appealed to everyone to vote.

He said, "We are all responsible citizens of this country...I have come to know that the voter turnout is low. Don't be lazy. Step out and vote, it is very important..."

Shiv Sena (UBT) MP and candidate from South Mumbai, Arvind Sawant said, "I am amazed by the love people have given me. 100% I will score a hat-trick (of victory)..." He faces a contest from Shiv Sena candidate Yamini Jadhav.
 

Mumbai BJP president Ashish Shelar said, "I appeal to the voters to participate in this festival of democracy that comes after every five years. ECI has made good arrangements and people should follow ECI's guidelines... I have seen enthusiasm in people for the BJP, especially in the roadshow of PM Modi. Mahayuti will win all the six seats (in Mumbai)..."

UP Deputy CM Keshav Prasad Maurya said, "The first four phases of the Lok Sabha elections have been amazing. Seeing from the point of view of the BJP, we have already won more than 270 seats."

"In the fifth phase of the elections, I see one-sided support for the BJP, especially in the 14 seats of UP, including Raebareli... I urge everyone to exercise their right to vote... This election is historic..."
 

In Jammu and Kashmir, preparations are going on at a special polling station set up for Kashmiri migrants in Jagti, Baramulla constituency. 
 

Congress candidate from Amethi Lok Sabha, KL Sharma said, "... Whatever is there in mind of the people, they will vote according to it... When people start fighting, then you cannot mislead people by making false promises... They need to talk about inflation, unemployment, and infrastructure... We have fought the election positively... The other day Rahul Gandhi assured me of a result similar to that of Raebareli and that gave me confidence."

Uttarakhand CM Pushkar Singh Dhami responded to AAP MP Swati Maliwal's assault case. He said, "Kejriwal ji is doing a gimmick. Supporting an accused is also like being a part of the crime."

"Arvind Kejriwal is making a gimmick to save someone who assaulted a woman who is also an MP. The people of the country are seeing the AAP & INDI alliance are 'Mahila virodhi'. None of the INDI alliance leaders have condemned or said anything about this incident," he added. 

TMC leader Shashi Panja alleged, "We would like to highlight an incident that in Uluberia a woman has been molested by the Central force deployed in the area for the election duty."

"This is an unfortunate incident. What is the duty of central force, to molest a woman?... What were they trying to do by doing such action? PM Modi speaks about women's safety but he is silent on this incident. We have gone to ECI and requested action...They cannot do this in Bengal," she added.

Security heightened in Mumbai ahead of the 5th phase of the Lok Sabha elections tomorrow. Out of the 48 Lok Sabha seats in Maharashtra, 13 of them to go for polling in the fifth phase.

This time around, Sonia Gandhi has decided to leave Rae Bareli for a place in Rajya Sabha — the upper house of parliament — from Rajasthan. Instead, the Congress has fielded Rahul Gandhi, the fifth-generation scion of the party's Nehru-Gandhi family, who lost familyborough of Amethi to BJP's Smriti Irani in 2019, and this time around in 2024 decided to not return to what was once a family bastion.

Security has been stepped up in West Bengal's seven constituencies which have a history of election-related violence. ANI reported that over 57 per cent of the polling stations identified as sensitive in this phase, the highest till now in this Lok Sabha election. 

Union Minister Jitendra Singh has said that the fifth phase polling will be a reaffirmation of the lotus "blooming" in West Bengal. he claimed that BJP is set to wrest the highest number of seats in the state. 

In West Bengal, voting in seven Lok Sabha constituencies - Bangaon, Barrackpur, Howrah, Uluberia, Sreerampur, Hooghly and Arambag - will be held. 

Some of the prominent candidates include Union ministers Piyush Goyal (Mumbai North, Maharashtra), Sadhvi Niranjan Jyoti (Fatehpur, UP) and Shantanu Thakur (Bangaon, WB); LJP (Ram Vilas) leader Chirag Paswan (Hajipur, Bihar), Shiv Sena’s Shrikant Shinde (Kalyan, Maharashtra), and BJP's Rajiv Pratap Rudy and RJD president Lalu Prasad's daughter Rohini Acharya (both Saran, Bihar). 

The fifth phase of another important phase for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) as over 40 of these seats were with the National Democratic Alliance (NDA). 

Among the seats going to polls, 13 are in Maharashtra, 14 in Uttar Pradesh, seven in West Bengal, five in Bihar, three in Jharkhand, five in Odisha, one in J-K and the lone seat in Ladakh. 

This phase covers the least number of seats (49) in the seven-phase elections, but some are crucial. 

On Sunday, electoral officials were seen queued at polling material distribution centres to prepare for the fifth phase. Officials collected Electronic Voting Machines (EVM) after going through a series of checks and procedures amid high security to ensure a fair and free election. 

Over 8.95 crore people, including 4.26 crore females and 5,409 third-gender electors, are eligible to vote in this round and 9.47 lakh polling officials have been deployed across 94,732 polling stations, ANI reported. 

India is all set for the fifth phase of the general election with polling scheduled to be held on Monday (May 20) in 49 constituencies in six states and two UTs. 

The fifth phase of Lok Sabha elections will decide the electoral fate of several prominent leaders like former Congress president Rahul Gandhi, Union ministers Rajnath Singh and Smriti Irani and former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Omar Abdullah.
