A voter turnout of 10.28 per cent was recorded till 9 am in the fifth phase of polling for Lok Sabha polls, stated the Election Commission of India (ECI). 

Bihar recorded 8.86 per cent voter turnout, Jharkhand 11.68 per cent, Jammu and Kashmir recorded 7.63 per cent. Ladakh 10.51 per cent, Maharashtra 6.33 per cent, West Bengal 15.35 per cent and Odisha 6.87 per cent, stated the poll body.

Uttarakhand CM Pushkar Singh Dhami responded to AAP MP Swati Maliwal's assault case. He said, "Kejriwal ji is doing a gimmick. Supporting an accused is also like being a part of the crime."

"Arvind Kejriwal is making a gimmick to save someone who assaulted a woman who is also an MP. The people of the country are seeing the AAP & INDI alliance are 'Mahila virodhi'. None of the INDI alliance leaders have condemned or said anything about this incident," he added.

TMC leader Shashi Panja alleged, "We would like to highlight an incident that in Uluberia a woman has been molested by the Central force deployed in the area for the election duty."

"This is an unfortunate incident. What is the duty of central force, to molest a woman?... What were they trying to do by doing such action? PM Modi speaks about women's safety but he is silent on this incident. We have gone to ECI and requested action...They cannot do this in Bengal," she added.

Security has been stepped up in West Bengal's seven constituencies which have a history of election-related violence. ANI reported that over 57 per cent of the polling stations identified as sensitive in this phase, the highest till now in this Lok Sabha election. 

Union Minister Jitendra Singh has said that the fifth phase polling will be a reaffirmation of the lotus "blooming" in West Bengal. he claimed that BJP is set to wrest the highest number of seats in the state. 

In West Bengal, voting in seven Lok Sabha constituencies - Bangaon, Barrackpur, Howrah, Uluberia, Sreerampur, Hooghly and Arambag - will be held.

This phase covers the least number of seats (49) in the seven-phase elections, but some are crucial.

On Sunday, electoral officials were seen queued at polling material distribution centres to prepare for the fifth phase. Officials collected Electronic Voting Machines (EVM) after going through a series of checks and procedures amid high security to ensure a fair and free election. 

Over 8.95 crore people, including 4.26 crore females and 5,409 third-gender electors, are eligible to vote in this round and 9.47 lakh polling officials have been deployed across 94,732 polling stations, ANI reported.

India is all set for the fifth phase of the general election with polling scheduled to be held on Monday (May 20) in 49 constituencies in six states and two UTs. 

The fifth phase of Lok Sabha elections will decide the electoral fate of several prominent leaders like former Congress president Rahul Gandhi, Union ministers Rajnath Singh and Smriti Irani and former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Omar Abdullah.
