Union minister Kiren Rijiju on Monday defended RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat for his remarks that the organisation had the power to form an army within three days while the Indian army would take six months to prepare society.

The minister of state for home affairs said that what the RSS chief meant was that it took six to seven months for a person to be trained soldier and RSS cadres also had the ability to contribute if the constitution so permitted.

Kiren Rijiju also slammed the Congress for politicising the issue and said the party had also politicised the surgical strikes by the Indian Army against Pakistan-based terrorists in 2016. After his remarks, Congress president Rahul Gandhi had accused Mohan Bhagwat of "disrespecting" the Army and those who have laid down their lives for the country.

The Trinamool Congress (TMC) was quick to criticise Rijiju, with TMC leader Derek O'Brien calling him a "minister of Sangh."

"Kiren Rijiju is not a minister of state but a minister of Sangh. A minister of the government is supporting and defending the RSS," O'Brien told the press.

"After the tweet of Rijiju, it has become even more evident that this government is being remote controlled by the RSS," he added.

Derek O'Brien also tweeted his criticism:

The RSS has claimed that its chief's speech has been misrepresented and that Bhagwat had not compared the Indian Army with the Sangh.
