After a review meeting at the Southern Naval Command in Kochi on Saturday to discuss the calamitous floods in Kerala, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced an interim relief of Rs 500 crore against a demand of Rs 2,000 crore made by the State government.

This is apart from the Central assistance of Rs100 crore announced earlier.

Modi also announced an ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh each to the kin of the deceased and Rs 50,000 each to those seriously injured in the floods, both taken from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund.

''The Hon’ble Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced an assistance of ₹500 crore. CM had requested an immediate assistance of ₹2000 crore. We express our thanks to Centre for the assistance,'' Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan tweeted.

In the meeting convened to assess the flood situation, Kerala CM informed Mod that the State has suffered a loss of Rs 19, 512.
