Indian Parliament monsoon session | No Confidence Motion defeated in the Lok Sabha

<p><strong>Indian Parliament updates: </strong>This is the third day of the ongoing no-confidence motion against PM Narendra Modi’s government in the Indian Parliament. <em><strong>Catch all live updates here.</strong></em></p> <p>After two days of debate in the parliament with both the opposition and ruling party trading blows, PM Modi is expected to address the lawmakers to give his reply. </p> <p> </p> <p>Although the non-trust motion poses no threat to the NDA government, as the government has overwhelming numbers in its favour, many see it as an attempt by the newly-minted opposition bloc of INDIA to announce its arrival. </p> <p> </p> <p>On Wednesday (August 9), Congress leader Rahul Gandhi took to the Lok Sabha floor an d gave a fiery speech where he accused the Modi government of murdering Mother India in the northeastern state of Manipur.  </p>

LJP (Ram Vilas) chief Chirag Paswan, while speaking in the Lok Sabha, said, "This (Manipur crisis) should be a collective responsibility, not selective responsibility. If such an incident happens with any mother or daughter in any part of the country, then it is unforgivable and condemnable. The way Home Minister made an appeal (for peace in Manipur), we will have to get together."

In challenging the BJP administration regarding the Manipur unrest, Mahua Moitra, a TMC MP, highlighted that such a form of ethnic violence had not been observed in any state for numerous decades.

Speaking during the no-confidence motion debate, Moitra questioned, "Which state has experienced six thousand five hundred FIRs in three months? Which state has witnessed the destruction of four thousand houses and displacement of sixty thousand people?"

Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Mahua Moitra criticised the BJP government's approach towards managing the turmoil in Manipur, labeling it as the most significant setback of the coalition government.

She clarified that the no-confidence motion's purpose was not solely numerical defeat of the government, but rather to compel the Prime Minister to address the issue.

Moitra pointed out that such a level of violence had not been observed in any state over the past few decades.

As the Rajya Sabha convenes, Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar states, "Following the adjournment of the House, I had the opportunity to engage with the floor leaders. We had a comprehensive discussion, with everyone contributing. Three matters were under consideration — notices under Rule 267 and Rule 176."

"As progress seemed stymied, notices under Rule 167 emerged as a potential solution, as suggested by some leaders. Before these notices formally reached me, there was substantial public speculation about a potential compromise."

"I hold a strong sense of optimism. The Honourable Leader of the Opposition had his commitments, yet he kindly dispatched representatives to express their position."

The Rajya Sabha sessions have recommenced. Earlier today, the proceedings were suspended due to a commotion that erupted between the government and the Opposition regarding the rule governing the discussion on the Manipur violence. Amidst the chaos, Leader of the Opposition, Mallikarjun Kharge, queried whether Prime Minister Narendra Modi possesses divine status, as he seemingly couldn't attend Parliament. Consequently, the upper house was adjourned until 2 PM.

Nirmala Sitharaman, the Finance Minister, stated, "We are in the process of procuring tomatoes from tomato-growing regions in Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, and distributing them through cooperative societies like NCCF and NAFED. This distribution has been active since July 14th in Bihar, West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, and Rajasthan, and will continue. Furthermore, in Delhi, mobile vans are being used as outlets for NCCF, NAFED, and Kendriya Bhandar."

"We have realised that the banking sector needs to be healthy and therefore we took a lot of measures. Karnataka Minister and Congress leader Priyank Kharge said on Thursday that Prime Minister Modi's reply on the no-confidence motion would be his "Mann Ki Baat."

“The standard operating procedure will be followed, the PM will play victim card, he’ll blame the previous governments. He’ll invoke Nehru ji, Rajiv Gandhi, Manmohan Singh, and blame Rahul Gandhi...It took more than 80 days for the PM to say the word Manipur…It’s just going to be his ‘Mann ki Baat’ today,” Kharge told news agency ANI.

Senior BJP leader and Union Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal took shot at Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury who claimed that the parliament channel had cut short Rahul Gandhi's speech, a day before. 

"Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury should understand the role of the Speaker and Sansad TV, before pointing out the government. Rahul Gandhi was never disturbed during his speech yesterday, but the word 'Bharat Mata ki hatya' is not something that should be used in the Parliament," said Meghwal.
