India: Congress expels Sanjay Nirupam for 6 years over ‘indiscipline’, ‘anti-party statements’

The Congress party on Wednesday (April 3) expelled senior leader Sanjay Nirupam for six years for ‘indiscipline’ and ‘anti-party statements’.

Sanjay Nirupam, hadlambasted Congressfor conceding the prized Mumbai North West Lok Sabha seat to its former rival, now ally, the Shiv Sena led by Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray. Nirupam's allegations of corruption against the Shiv Sena's candidate, Amol Kirtikar, further escalated tensions within the party.

Nana Patole, the State Congress President, announced that the Maharashtra Congress has forwarded a proposal to the party leadership for disciplinary action against Nirupam. Patole highlighted Nirupam's contentious remarks and suggested that disciplinary proceedings were imminent.

He drew attention to the Enforcement Directorate's investigation into the 'khichdi scam'involving Kirtikar, adding fuel to the political fire.

The Shiv Sena's nomination of candidates for parliamentary seats in Mumbai, particularly the Mumbai North West constituency, prompted Nirupam's accusations of a concerted effort to undermine the Congress party's electoral prospects.
