
At least six people were killed and several were injured on Wednesday (June 7) in a freak train mishap in Odisha — just days after the same state in east Indiawitnessed a major three-train accident that killed nearly 300 people and injured many more.
The victims were reportedly run over by a goods train at Jajpur Road Railway station at the time when they weretakingshelter under a wagon due to the heavy downpour.
Local reports mentioned that bogies of the goods trains rolled down abruptly.
The wagons were not attached to the engine and they were parked on the safety track. More details are awaited.
While responding to the incident,East Coast Railway CPRO Biswajit Sahu said, "Few labourers, who were carrying out railway upkeep workhad taken shelter under a wagon due to the downpour."
"Due to gusty winds, the wagon rolled which led to four deaths and few injuries," Sahu added.
The nation was shocked as at least 261 people died in India's worst rail accident in over two decades. Authorities used cranes to move the mangled train coaches off the crash site.
One train in Friday's accident also hit a freight train parked nearby in the district of Balasore in Odisha state, leaving a tangled mess of smashed rail cars and injuring 650.
The three-way collision occurred around 7 pm(local time) on Friday which involvedBengaluru-Howrah Superfast Express, the Coromandel Express and goods train on three separate tracks occurred at Bahanagar in Odisha's Balasore district.
The Howrah Superfast Express from Bengaluru to Howrah in West Bengal collided with the Coromandel Express from Kolkata to Chennai.
