Hyderabad will no longer be joint capital of Andhra Pradesh, Telangana

Hyderabad will no longer be the joint capital of the Indian states of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. This will come into effect from Sunday, according to media reports. According to the AP Reorganisation Act, 2014, "On and from the appointed day, June 2, Hyderabad in the existing state of Andhra Pradesh shall be the common capital of the state of Telangana and the State of Andhra for such a period not exceeding 10 years."

According to Section 5 (2) of the act, following the expiry of this period, Hyderabad would be the capital of Telangana and there would be a new capital for Andhra Pradesh.

What's next for Andhra Pradesh?

So far, Andhra Pradesh has no permanent capital as the fight over Vizag and Amravati continues in courts, The Times of India (TOI) reported on Sunday.

As per the report, incumbent Andhra Chief Minister Jagan Mohan Reddy said that if he remains CM, Vizag would be the state's administrative capital while Amravati would be the seat of the legislature, and Kurnool would be the judicial capital.

What happened between 2014-2024?

During the 10 years,Andhra Pradesh could operate its administration and assembly proceedings from Hyderabad, till it had a capital city, a Hindustan Times report said.

According to theagreement,part of the secretariat complex and a few buildings in Hyderabad were allotted to Andhra Pradesh to run the administration.

With Hyderabad becoming the capital of only Telangana, Chief MinisterA Revanth Reddy has told officials to take over the buildings allotted to Andhra Pradesh during the 10 years, the Hindustan Times reported. Theinstruction was given during an official review meeting last month.
