BJP MP Subramanian Swamy said Tuesday that homosexuality is "not a normal thing".
"We cannot celebrate it. It's against Hindutva," he added. And that "we should invest in medical research to see if it can be cured".
The Supreme Court on Tuesday began hearing a batch of petitions against Section 377 which says homosexuality is a crime.
Section 377 was struck down by the Delhi High Court in 2009 — the court said thelaw was unconstitutional — but the judgement was set aside by the Supreme Court in December 2013. The country's top court passed the buck onto Parliament, saying only it can make laws.
The petitions the Supreme Court will now hear have been filed, among others, by the NGO Naz Foundation, which had filed the original petition that led to the Delhi High Court's 2009 judgement, the parents of gay people, and Voices Against 377, a collective of human rights groups.
