Darjeeling has been the epicenter of protests between the supporters of the Gorkhaland agitation, who want a separate state to be carved out of the hilly region, and the security forces.

The Bimal Gurung-led Gorkhaland Janmukti Morcha (GJM) is leading the agitation. Violent clashes have been reported between GJM activists and security personnel in the last couple of months, paralysing life in the hill region.

The Mamata Banerjee-headed West Bengal government has invited the government for resolving the stand-off.
