After taking feedback from states, the Centre has reportedly decided to withdraw its ban on the sale of cattle for slaughter in animal markets.
A senior official from the Ministry of Environment and Forests was quoted by a media outlet as saying that a file had been sent to the Ministry of Law earlier this week that the government was withdrawing its May 23 notification, on changes made to the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, because of various issues and would be revising it.
The ban had invited criticism from several quarters including slaughterhouse owners, states like Kerala and West Bengal, and farmers who opposed the restrictiction of trade in markets only to animals meant for agricultural use. The states had objected to the ban, stating it related to an issue under their jurisdiction.
The government had asked the states for their opinion on their notification in September.
In May, the Madras High Court granted an interim stay on the implementation of the rules.
In July, the Supreme Court had stayed the ban on the sale of cattle for slaughter to the entire country.
