The Goa Congress has staked its claim form a government in the state. The Congress has submitted a letter to the Raj Bhavan, but has not yet met with the governor.
"Submitted 2 memorandums and requested that situation to undergo election within 18 months shouldn't arise. People elected us for 5 years. If present governmetn is not capable to function, we should be given the chance, we'll do it," ANI reported Congress Legislature Party chief Chandrakant Kavlekar as saying.
The current crisis in Goa has been triggered by Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar's deteriorating health. Parrikar is currently admitted to Delhi's All India Institute of Medical Sciences.
"We're single largest party, should've been given the chance earlier. See how government is functioning today," Kavlekar said.
"Government hote huye bhi na ke barabar hai.We have numbers, so we're staking claim. Governor will be here tomorrow. We'll request him for it," he added.
The Goa assembly has 40 seats. The BJP has 14 MLAs but is in government in alliance with the MGP, the GFP, the IND and the NCP.
The Opposition Congress has 16 seats.
