Once feared by people and policemen alike, gangster Prem Prakash Singh alias Munna Bajrangihas been shot dead inside the district jail in Baghpat in Uttar Pradesh on Monday.

Sources say an inmate, lodged in the same prison, fired at Munna Bajrangi inside the jail at about 6.30 am, killing him instantly.

According to reports, gangster Sunil Rathi, Bajrangi’s jail inmate, opened fire on him.

Bajrangi has been in jail since his arrest from Mumbai in January 2009.

Munna Bajrangi was transferred to Baghpat jail from Jhansi on Sunday.

The incident comes after his wife had held a press conference and claimed a threat to his life stating that plans are being chalked out to kill him in a 'fake encounter'.

The gangster has been accused of multiple murders, including that of BJP MLA Krishnanand Rai.

He was also said to be involved in several rackets, including extortion, contract killing and manipulation of land deals.

Bajrangi had also forayed into politics by contesting election from Mariyahu in Jaunpur as an Apna Dal candidate in 2012 while his wife contested from the same seat in 2017.

Bajrangi belonged to Jaunpur only. In 2012, Bajrangi had secured around 36,000 votes while SP MLA Shraddha Yadav polled 55,745 votes and won.

Seema Singh had lost the polls in 2017. In March 2016, Bajrangi's younger brother in law who looked after his business Pushpajeet had been killed in Lucknow. The case remains unsolved.
