Gandhi Jayanti 2023: India's Mahatma revered on his 154th birth anniversary; world tributes pour in

<p>The timeless legacy of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, the barrister from western India's coastal town of Porbandar, who came to be known as Mahatma — meaning the revered being — is being celebrated in India and across the world on his 154th birth anniversary. The relevance of the Gandhian idea of non-violence that became philosophical guide of India's struggle for freedom from the British. It saw a remarkable moment of reinvigoration recently with the photographic symbolism of leaders of world's 20 wealthiest nations paying their respects to Gandhi at his resting place in New Delhi last month. India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid his respects to Gandhi at Rajghat and said that "Gandhi's impact is global, motivating the entire humankind to further the spirit of unity and compassion."</p>

While PM Modi paid his tribute, he launched a cleanliness drive beginning on October 01 on the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti. The campaign "Ek Tareekh, Ek Ghanta, Ek Saath," is a run-up initiative to the "Swachhata Pakhwada-Swachhta Hi Seva" 2023 camapign. 

Taking the campaign forward Modi said that this campaign is a step forwards towards fulfilling Mahatma Gandhi's dream of 'Clean India.'

President of India Droupadi Murmu and Vice President Jagdeep Dhankar paid floral tributes to Mahatma Gandhi at Rajghat in the national capital.

"His thoughts were not merely idle musings, but an outcome of his sustained practice. That philosophy which is not made part of life was, according to him, "dry as dust". Thoughts, words and deeds were of a piece, in his case," the president wrote on X.
