Story highlights

Cockroach Janta Party spokespersons Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka were detained by Delhi Police on Tuesday after entering Jantar Mantar by jumping its locked gates. The incident came a day after the site lost its designated protest venue status

Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) chief spokesperson Saurav Das and its national spokesperson Ashutosh Ranka were detained by the Delhi Police on Tuesday (Oct 13) after they and several other leaders of their party jumped and entered Jantar Mantar's locked gates and claimed that it has been breached. This came in response of Delhi Police's notice stating that the site has lost its designated protest venue status.

CJP founder Abhijit Dipke shared the video of the incident on his X and said that “Cockroaches with the Tiranga sneaked into Jantar Mantar early this morning before they were picked up by Delhi Police.” Tagging Prime Minister Narendra Modi, he said that “resistance” cannot be denotified. Ranka also shared the same video and wrote on X: “Fortress Jantar Mantar has been breached.” Saurav Das shared the video from a different angle and said that Jantar Mantar protest site has been “reclaimed.” He said that the act was done to remind the younger generation that "we can do it! Gyanu, you’re done bro!" he wrote. Dipke also shared an image of Ranka waving the national flag outside Jantar Mantar.

Delhi Police on Oct 12 issued a notice naming three new sites in the national capital for holding protests and demonstrations – Ramlila Ground, Burari Ground and CBD Ground in east Delhi. The notice stated that Jantar Mantar has been de-notified as a protest site. The decision followed recommendations from a committee set up by the Union Home Ministry to identify alternative venues where citizens could exercise their right to organise protests and demonstrations.

It came amid wave of protests taking place in the national capital against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. The Opposition parties, including Congress, the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP), and student organisations including the All India Students’ Association (AISA) and the Students’ Federation of India (SFI) sought permission in the past weeks to protest at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi. However, Delhi Police denied the permission. Widespread protest took place on Oct 10 and Oct 12 in Central Delhi even as heavy security was deployed.
