Story highlights

While many have raised objection over the said scene, there are others like filmmaker Karana Johar who have come out in support of Swara and the scene itself.

So much has been debated and discussed about Swara Bhasker's controversial masturbation scene in 'Veere Di Wedding'. The actress has been relentlessly for defending the scene in the film. In fact, CBFC board member Vani Tripathi has lashed out at the makers of the film stating that the film is perverse in showing such a scene.

While many have raised objection over the said scene, there are others like filmmaker Karana Johar who have come out in support of Swara and the scene itself. In an interview to a leading channel, Johar stated that he was glad that people were at least talking about masturbation openly thanks to the film.

"I think a conversation is always great. The much talked about masturbation scene in VDW has opened up a forum of conversation. There are all kinds, of course, like trolls, bad, ridiculous views, and some completely regressive perspectives but the fact is that suddenly we are talking about masturbation and let's say that that's a great thing. So for people out there who feel the concept only is blasphemous now are suddenly talking about it through a mainstream film. More power to those girls who accepted these roles and more power to the filmmaker who made this film. We are talking about this in an open forum suddenly," said the director.

"There was a lot of criticism we got for 'Dostana' because of the stereotypical nature of certain representations and I do believe that a lot of criticism was justified. There was a certain kind of representation that was typical. But the fact is that it started a conversation, the issue became dining table conversation in parts of the country that are unaware of the concept of homosexuality. It was a conversation starter, "the director further added.

Swara has, of course, defended the scene and has even given a fitting reply to her trolls.

Veere Di Wedding featuring Kareena Kapoor, Sonam Kapoor, Shikha Talsania, Sumeet Vyas and Swara Bhasker released on June 1st to packed halls across the country. It had the third highest opening of 2018 and has earned Rs 73.68 crores already at the box office.
