The Income Tax Department has warned salaried taxpayers not to file incorrect tax returns.
The "cautionary advisory" was issued after the department stumbled upon instances of the malpractice in Bengaluru, Mumbai, and Ludhiana.
The advisory, issued on Monday, said the offence was punishable under provisions of the Income Tax Act.
News reports said Thursday that the advisory warned taxpayers against using the services of “unscrupulous intermediaries”. The reports added that alarm bells had gone off in Bengaluru after incorrect claims were made in tax returns filed through a man posing as a chartered accountant
The reports added that the department also threatened to refer the cases to other enforcement agencies for further action.
The reports quoted officials from the department as saying the advisory was issued after surveys in three cities showed salaried taxpayers claiming benefits on house property that they did not own.
Similarly, the survey threw up instances of people claiming donations to institutions when none had in fact been made.
