Atishi succeeds Arvind Kejriwal as Delhi's new Chief Minister

Atishi Marlena Delhi's new Chief Minister: Aam Aadmi Party national convenor and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Tuesday (Sep 17) proposed the name of party leader Atishi as his successor.

As per reports, she was subsequently elected as leader of the Delhi AAP Legislative Party.

On its official X account, the Aam Aadmi Party announced the decision and wrote,"The new Chief Minister of Delhi will be@AtishiAAP ji".

"Atishi ji's name was approved in the legislative party meeting".

Kejriwal backs Atishi

Addressing a legislature party meeting at his residence in the national capital, Kejriwal made the proposal for Atishi as his successor. The decision received the support of the AAP party MLAs.

This comes just days after Kejriwal announced his decision to step down as Delhi's chief minister.

On Saturday (Sep 14), Kejriwal announced that he would resign and that until the people of Delhi declared him "honest" he would not resume as the CM.

He said, that if re-elected by the public, it would serve as a "certificate" of his honesty.

Kejriwal has also called for early polls in the Indian national capital in November this year. The polls are scheduled for February.

The announcement by the 54-year-old leader came just days after he was released from the Tihar Jail after being granted bail by the Supreme Court in a corruption case related to the alleged Delhi Excise Policy scam.
