Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal was given insulin on Monday night in India's Tihar Jail after his blood sugar level skyrocketed to 320. The Aam Aadmi Party leader on Monday (Apr 22) accused the Tihar prison management of failing to provide him with insulin despite numerous demands.

Tihar denied Kejriwal's accusations, saying specialists from All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) did not recommend insulin.

“Finally, the BJP [ruling Bharatiya Janata Party] and its jail administration came to their senses and gave INSULIN to CM Arvind Kejriwal in jail," the AAP wrote on X.

"CM Kejriwal's sugar level had reached 320. This has been possible only due to the blessings of Lord Hanuman and the struggle of the people of Delhi. We have succeeded in delivering insulin to our Chief Minister,” it said.

"Today it is clear that the Chief Minister was right, he needed insulin. But the officials under the BJP's central government were deliberately not treating him," Delhi Minister and AAP leader Saurabh Bharadwaj said in a statement.

"Tell me BJP people! If insulin is not needed then why are you giving it now? Because the whole world is cursing them," he asked.

AIIMS was ordered by a city court to establish a medical board in order to evaluate Kejriwal's medical requirements, specifically concerning insulin.

The court drew attention to differences between the doctor's recommended diet and the Delhi chief minister's home-cooked meal plan.

Kejriwal refuted the jail administration's claim that he never brought up the topic of insulin during his meetings with the doctors in a letter he sent to the Tihar jail superintendent on Monday.

The Delhi CM maintains that throughout 10 days, he brought up the subject of insulin requirement repeatedly.

"I showed my high sugar levels to every doctor who came to see me. I showed them that there were three peaks in the sugar level every day -- between 250-320," Kejriwal said in his letter.

"I also showed them that my fasting sugar level was in the range of 160-200 every day. Almost every day, I demanded insulin. Then how could you make such a statement that I never raised the issue of insulin?" he added.

Delhi BJP president Virendra Sachdeva said: "Of course, Arvind Kejriwal is a diabetic, but his sugar is under control in jail because he did not ask for insulin even during the video interaction with the doctors of AIIMS and RML."

Why is Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal in jail?

The Delhi chief minister has been in Tihar jail since April 1 after being taken into custody by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on March 21 in relation to a money-laundering case involving the government of Delhi's now-canceled excise policy.

On May 15, the Delhi High Court will consider Kejriwal's appeal against the summonses that the investigation agency had issued him.
