Tamil Nadu on Thursday reported 161 new coronavirus cases in the last 24 hours including 138 from Chennai as the number of COVID-19 cases surged to 2,323.

There are now 3,3610 cases of the virus nationwide with 1,075 fatalities. 24,162 are "active cases" in India, according to the health ministry.

The Maharashtra government said today that in order to decongest hospitals, all asymptomatic positive patients without comorbidity should be shifted to COVID care centres immediately as the number of coronavirus cases continued to climb in the state.

Odisha today reported 14 new COVID-19 cases taking the total number of cases in the state to 142 which includes 102 active cases, the state government said.

In Chhattisgarh, two more people tested positive for coronavirus as the number of COVID-19 cases rose to 40 in the state even as Kerala minister Sunil Kumar said that Ernakulam district administration has decided to remove Chullikkal area in Kochi from the list of COVID-19 "hotspot area".

In Assam, four more coronavirus cases were reported from Bongaigaon district taking the number of COVID-19 patients in Assam to 41.
