Congress has failed as an opposition: PM Modi

"In last four years, the truth of Congress and its associates has been revealed. Earlier, the public removed them because of their failure to deliver good governance, inefficiency in taking decisions, and corruption. Now they've failed to play the role of the opposition," Modi said.

Modi made his comments while speaking to the BJP's booth level workers via his NaMo app.

Modi said the Congress and its associates are coming together now because the "elections are approaching".

"If Congress and its associates had worked together in the last four years and placed issues before the public, the people would at least have believed them. But they were not bothered over the last four years," Modi said.

"Now that the elections are approaching, they've come together," Modi added.

A large-scale alliance of opposition parties is working at fashioning a grand alliance before the 2019 general elections to take on the BJP. There has been talk of the alliance putting up only one opposition candidate against the BJP in every seat, so as to not split the non-BJP vote.

The opposition has had a fair amount of success with the strategy so far.

Modi added in his talk Thursday that "I often feel sympathy for old Congress workers who struggled and worked on the ground for the party". Modi added that "their entire struggle and support are being used for a single family".

And that the "best people were sacrificed for the interest of that family".

Modi's references to the family of course were to the first family of the Congress — the Gandhi family.
