CIK chargesheets Kulgam-based doctor couple over ‘inflammatory’ online content

The Counter Intelligence Kashmir (CIK) filed a chargesheet against a doctor couple accused in a case registered under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) for allegedly misusing social media platforms to spread misleading and inflammatory content. The chargesheet was presented before the Special Judge designated under the National Investigation Agency Act in Srinagar in connection with FIR No. 05/2025 registered at Police Station CIK Srinagar.

The accused have been identified as Dr. Umer Farooq Bhat and his wife Shahzada Akther, both residents of Bugam in Kulgam district. They have been booked under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and sections of the UAPA. According to officials, the case was initiated following credible inputs suggesting that Shahzada Akther, allegedly in conspiracy with members of the banned Outfit, Dukhtaran-e-Millat, and in coordination with her husband, was involved in creating and disseminating false and distorted narratives about the situation in Kashmir. Investigations revealed that the accused allegedly used various social media platforms, including encrypted messaging applications, to circulate fabricated content aimed at promoting separatist sentiments and fostering disaffection against the Union of India.

Officials further stated that the content shared by the duo was intended to create communal discord and incite unrest by provoking sections of society, particularly youth. Such activities, investigators said, posed a threat to public order and national security. “Evidence collected during the investigation substantiates their involvement in offences under the BNS and UAPA,” officials said, adding that the chargesheet has been filed for judicial determination.

Reaffirming its mandate, the Counter Intelligence Kashmir said it remains committed to safeguarding national security and maintaining public order, warning that strict action will continue against individuals or networks engaged in activities that threaten the country’s sovereignty and integrity.
