Chaiwala could become PM because Congress preserved democracy: Kharge
The Congress' Mallikarjun Kharge has said a chaiwala like Modi could become prime minister because the Congress preserved democracy.
"Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been asking, at every function, about what the Congress has done for the country in the past 70 years," Kharge said.
"A chaiwala like him could become Prime Minister because we preserved democracy," he then added.
Kharge was speaking in Mumbai.
This is not the first time the opposition has called Modi, who reportedly helped his father at his tea stall as a child, a "chaiwala". The latest reiteration of the chaiwala jibe come on the heels of a fierce BJP attack on the Congress on the anniversary (June 25) of the imposition of the Emergency.
"Modi speaks about Emergency that happened 43 years back, but what about the undeclared Emergency in last 4 years? Farmers are committing suicide, agricultural schemes are failing, farmers aren't getting new loans and trade is on slow track," Kharge said on Sunday.
"On the other hand, the government's expenditure on advertising is unstoppable. Acche din will come into the lives of people once the Modi government is dethroned," Kharge added.
The senior Congress leader from Karnataka also told party workers to "come together, fight together". Adding, "We will definitely win the Parliament polls if the Congress wins in Maharashtra. Victory at the Centre depends on Maharashtra."
