
On Sunday, the West Bengal Police filed a complaint following the a video showing a man, who is allegedly alocal TMC politician, mercilessly attacking a woman and a man on road made rounds of social media. Amit Malviya, the head of the BJP's IT Cell, referred to the attack as the "ugly face of Mamata Banerjee's rule" in the state.
West Bengal Police filed a complaint as the controversy intensified after verification of the social media viral video clip, Islampur Police Superintendent Joby Thomas K told PTI.
The culprit was later arrested.
Meanwhile, the opposition BJP and CPI (M) have attacked the Mamata Banerjee administration and accused the TMC of complicity in the incident.
The opposition also said that the chief minister of West Bengal was executing "bulldozer justice" on the state. A local TMC politician in Chopra, Uttar Dinajpur district, is reportedly the one who beat the couple with a bamboo stick, according to a PTI report. The event happened after a'salishi sabha' (Kangaroo court) ruling. The couple was allegedly having an extramarital affair.
The man in the viral video is a TMC lawmaker known for "giving quick justice through insaf sabha," according to BJP IT Cell head Amit Malviya.
"This is the ugly face of Mamata Banerjee’s rule in West Bengal. The guy in the video, who is beating up a woman mercilessly... is famous for giving quick justice through his ‘insaf’ sabha and is a close associate of Chopra MLA Hamidur Rahaman," Malviya said in a post on X.
"Not even #KangarooCourt! Summary trial and punishment handed out by d ?@AITCofficial? goon... Literally bulldozer justice at Chopra under ?@MamataOfficial? rule," CPI(M) state secretary Md Salim said in a post on X.
