While addressing a crowd in a college in Madhya Pradesh, a BJP MLA Pannalal Shakyasuggested a way to curb violence against women - to not have boyfriends. He further said that boys should not make girlfriends either.
"In our country, women are worshipped four times, therefore I am not ready to accept that they are tortured. The data can reveal anything. Western culture should be kept at bay. Neither girlfriend nor boyfriend should be allowed," said PL Shakya, who represents Guna assembly constituency.
He said, that it would considerably reduce chances of assaults. According to Shakya, women face violence as they have boyfriends. He also took a dig at thecelebrations during International Women's Day. Deriding it as a western concept, Shakya told students that they shouldn't ape the West and try to follow Indian culture.
Shakya further advised the girls in the gathering to not misuse the phones provided to them.
Shakya also attracted controversy last year when he termed Virat Kohli and Anushka Sharma unpatriotic for marrying in Italy.
