A court of inquiry has been conducted which has recommended court-martial proceedings for Major Gogoi.

Army Chief Bipin Rawat on Tuesday referred to the Army officer Major Leetul Gogoi case stating that any incident of "moral turpitude and corruption will be dealt with sternly".

He also shared that a court of inquiry has been conducted which has recommended court-martial proceedings for Major Gogoi "for whatever he has been found guilty of," the Chief stated.

Army Chief Bipin Rawat had previously said exemplary punishment would be given to Major Gogoi if he was found guilty of "any offence".

"If any officer of the Indian army is found guilty of any offence, we will take strictest possible action," the army chief told reporters at Pahalgham in May.

"If Major Gogoi has done something wrong, I assure you that he will be awarded punishment at the earliest...The punishment will set an example," he stated.

A court of inquiry was ordered against Major Gogoi who was briefly detained by police in Srinagar after an altercation when he was allegedly trying to enter a hotel with an 18-year-old woman.

The Jammu and Kashmir Police had initiated an inquiry into the incident.

Major Gogoi sparked an outcry when he tied a civilian to the bonnet of his vehicle in Kashmir last year.
