Taiwan had requested countries not to be "bullied" by China

India's national carrier Air India has gone ahead and changed Taiwan's name as "Chinese Taipei" months after China told government's worldwide, including private airline companies not to display "Taiwan"on its website's drop-down list.

The Air India website now lists Taiwan as: Taiwan, Taoyuaon International Airport, TPE, Chinese Taipei.

Last month, Japan's two largest airlines hadchanged "Taiwan" to "China Taiwan" on itsChinese-language websites.

Japan Airlines (JAL) and All Nippon Airways (ANA) had said their alteration was made on June 12 and was meant to accommodate customers. The description remains "Taiwan" on their websites in Japanese and other languages.

Taiwan had requested countries not to be "bullied" by China and to take a "courageous" stand, the US government had declared China's demand to be "Orwellian nonsense".

The United States later opened a new de facto embassy in Taiwan attracting China's ire.

China considers Taiwan as a breakaway province and has been conducting military drills along the Taiwan Straits in recent months ratcheting up tensions in the area.
