Air India plane veers off runway at Kochi airport

Story highlights

An Air India plane dangerously veered off from the taxiway at Kochi airport while approaching parking bay. All passengers evacuated safely.

Air India's airplane went off the runway and rolled partly into a drain during its landing at around 2:40 am on Tuesday morning at Kerala's Kochi airport.

All 102 passengers and six crew members were safely evacuated from the Abu Dhabi-Kochi flight with the help of a ladder. The incident took place amid heavy rain.

Experts claim that the plane took a turn 90 metres before it was supposed to and therefore went off track.

"All passengers were evacuated through a ladder. All are safe. No casualties," a Cochin International Airport spokesperson said.

The aircraft is grounded. An internal inquiry has been initiated and a report has also gone to aviation regulator Directorate General of Civil Aviation, which is investigating the entire episode.

Last week, an Air India aircraft flying to San Francisco was delayed by around nine hours over a rat on the plane.
