The Gujarat police have detained Dalit activist and MLA Jignesh Mewani on Sunday for organising a protest in Ahmedabad.

Mewani had declared a shut down in Ahmedabad in protest against the death of a Dalit worker Bhanu Vankar.

He had appealed to the people to assemble near the statue of the Baba Ambedkar in Sarangpur.However, Mewani was arrested along with his supporters even before they could start the protest.

Meanwhile, the protesters claimed that they could not carry a peaceful protest in Ahmedabad and in different parts of the state due to policehigh-handedness.

On the other hand, the protest in Ahmedabad turned violent after cars were torched at different places.A huge number of police officials have been deployed to keep the situation under control.

A Dalit worker, Bhanu Vankar, immolated self in front of the Collector's office in Patan, Gujarat on February 15 and died in Ahmedabad's Apollo Hospital on February 16.
