The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) stated on Friday that it cannot share Aadhaar biometric data for criminal investigations and the biometrics collected will only be used for the purposeof generating Aadhaar or for verifying the identity of Aadhaar holders.

The UIDAI said that the access to Aadhaar data was not permissible under Section 29 of the Aadhaar Act 2016.

The UIDAI said, "as per Sec 29 of the Aadhaar Act, the biometric data collected by UIDAI can be used only for the purpose of generating Aadhaar and for authentication of the identity of Aadhaar holders and cannot be used for any other purpose".

Thishas come days after several media reports surfaced stating purported use of Aadhaar biometric data for purpose of crime investigation.

UIDAI also added that it has never shared any biometric data with any crime investigating agency. It highlighted that when Mumbai High Court gave orders to share biometric data with an investigating agency in particular, the matter was taken up by the Supreme Court which stayed that order.
